In 1940, philosopher and mathematician Bertrand Russell was accused of corrupting the youth of America; Radio and newspapers were marshaled by Christian moralists to confuse and coerce the American public: legal battles pitted the country's intelligentsia against the 'nice' people in a discussion about the limits of freedom of speech and the purpose of a democracy.
