    Sunday, October 7, 4:00pm
Shadows of the Ramayana in Puppets, Politics and Film
Professor Laurie Sears, University of Washington, Seattle

Ramayana traditions have been known in Java, Indonesia's largest island, and Bali, Indonesia's most desirable tourist destination, for at least 1500 years. But the stories changed as they made their way from India to Java and Bali. When Java became Islamic in the 15th and 16th centuries, Ramayana stories began to incorporate Islamic elements. Shadow theatre, a long-lived and much beloved performance tradition, was the vehicle that conveyed Ramayana stories over the centuries. This talk will explore how Ramayana traditions continue to thrive in Islamic Java and how the stories continue to serve as story-telling vehicles for politics and culture.

    Sunday, October 14, 4:00pm
The Ramayana and the sacred temples of Angkor: Cambodia and Beyond
Professor Boreth Ly, University of California, Santa Cruz

The Ramayana, an Indian derived epic poem, plays a significant role in the arts and culture of mainland Southeast Asia (Burma, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand). In this multimedia lecture, Professor Ly will discuss how this story is nuanced and localized in the arts of this region. Moreover, he will engage the audience in looking at visual narratives of this epic as rendered on the beautiful ancient stone temples of Angkor as well as Buddhist mural paintings and court dances of Cambodia and Thailand. Last, he will address how this tale is made manifest in modern politics and Contemporary art of Cambodia.

    Saturday, November 3, 4:00pm
    Many Sitas
Professor Heidi Pauwels, University of Washington, Seattle

The story of Ramayana is not possible without Sita. But which Sita? Sita has had a variety of characteristics, physical appearance, personal traits and relationships with the other characters in Ramayana. Pauwels will describe some of these various incarnations, as they appear in literature, film, television and other media.
