  Once upon a time, a kid on Vashon Island stuck a bicycle in the fork of a tree. The tree grew and, according to photographic evidence supplied by Book-It Theatre, it’s still there, embedded in the tree several feet off the ground. To hear Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist Berkeley Breathed tell it, the bicycle was actually placed there through the magic of an old man named Saunder Clös who might just have been the real Santa Claus, slightly senile and retired (for unclear reasons) to Washington. Based on Breathed’s 1994 children’s book of the same name, Book-It Theatre’s stellar production of Red Ranger Came Calling: A Guaranteed True Christmas Story is whimsical and heartwarming without being cloying. Adapted and directed by Myra Platt, with music by Platt and Edd Key, the story is based on the Depression-era experiences of Breathed’s father who, at age nine, was exiled by train to Vashon Island every year for the holidays.
