Yes, I admit, some parts were funny, but as a whole??? I'd say take your dollars down the street and have a couple drinks.   On the Nature of Dust settles the question. New Century Theatre Company is undoubtedly an actor's theatre. Following their reputation-making productions of The Adding Machine and Orange Flower Water, they prove once again that they are Seattle's troupe to watch with a world premiere comedy by in-house playwright, Stephanie Timm. "Kafkaesque" is probably the most overused term in the annals of theatre, but On the Nature of Dust is a clear re-imagining of The Metamorphosis. Teenager Clara Bliss (Brenda Joyner) is trapped in the modern purgatory of a run-down apartment with her younger-in-spirit mother. Amy Thone as Shirley Bliss is a raspy voiced white trash wonder; a former teen parent grown up into an immature, emotionally needy Marlboro Mom. Though Clara dreams of escape through a study abroad program, her true break comes when a kiss in a utility closet from confirmation classmate Bernie (Benjamin Harris) inexplicably sparks her de-evolution from human to chimpanzee to giant squirrel. As Shirley attempts to arrest Clara's rapid degeneration toward a single-celled organism, Clara's pastor (New Century Theatre's executive director Michael Patten) and biology teacher (Betsy Schwartz) wrestle over what it all means. Is Clara's transformation into a newt a miracle? A scientific fluke? Or a metaphor that her mother must let her go so that she can live her own life? The answer, as Timm points out with ever-increasing explicitness, is the latter. Joining the familiar theme of "if you love someone, set them free" is the juxtaposition of anti-evolution Christianity with Darwinian biology. Patten and Schwartz bring a thrilling electricity to their roles as polar opposites, clashing every time they unintentionally bump into each other, be it waiting in line at the fish counter of the grocery store or toting nearly identical boxes of cheap wine at the liquor store.
